Maya Angelou

I saw Maya Angelou last night at Arizona State University. It was one of the coolest things I have ever done. I was so excited that I was actually shaking before it started. She read poetry, she sang, she talked, but mostly she inspired as she always does. What she talked most about was...‘When it looked like the sun wasn’t gonna shine anymore, God put a rainbow in the clouds.’ According to Genesis, she said, when it seemed that the rain would never end, God created the rainbow. "But, in the 19th century," Angelou said, "some African-American lyricist decided that God must have put the rainbow in the clouds, because rainbows, suns, moons, stars, novae, comets, all sorts of luminosities, are in the sky all the time. However, clouds can so lower and lower that you cannot see the brightness. So, the suggestion was God put the rainbow in the clouds themselves so, in the worst of times, in the dreariest of times, in the most hopeless of times, you can see some light...." However, it does not nearly sound as good when it is written by me, for she touched on many other things, it is truly an event you have to experience to understand. She ended the evening with a poem she wrote the 50th anniversary of the United Nations but before she did she told us how when she was 16 she used to walk by the UN building and say that if she hadnt been who she was that she could walk through that building and do as all the others... she always wanted to be important enough to go in there... and 50 years later, they not only invited her in, but they asked her to write them a poem A Brave and Startling Truth by Maya Angelou
